What is a barndominium?
A barndominium is a post-frame building that combines finished living space with a shop, garage, or storage area under one roof. You get a real home with full kitchens, bedrooms, and baths, plus the working space you would otherwise build separately.
Because post-frame construction carries the load on laminated posts, barndominiums deliver wide open interiors and tall shop ceilings at a lower cost per square foot than conventional framing. Open-concept great rooms, vaulted ceilings, lofts, and porches are all straightforward. Burress handles design, permitting, and construction under one roof.

One building that does everything.
A barndominium puts your home, your shop, and your storage on one foundation, under one roof, on one budget.
01
Home and Shop Together
Live steps from your workspace. No separate structure, no second foundation, no walk across the yard in January.
02
More House for the Money
Post-frame construction typically costs less per square foot than a conventional home of the same size.
03
Wide-Open Floor Plans
Clear-span framing means no interior load-bearing walls, so great rooms, vaulted ceilings, and lofts are easy.
04
Efficient to Heat
Deep wall cavities hold generous insulation, and in-floor radiant heat keeps the whole building comfortable.
05
Finished Like a Home
Real kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, and trim. A barndominium should not feel like a converted shop.
06
Built to Last
Engineered posts and quality steel stand up to Black Hills wind, snow, and temperature swings.
One roof, every part of your life.

Popular barndominium features.
Barndominium, shouse, or traditional home.
The lines between these blur, and the right answer depends on how much of the building is living space versus working space. Here is how the three compare so you can decide what fits your property and budget.
Mostly home, with shop or storage attached. Full kitchens, bedrooms, and baths finished to residential standards, plus a bay or two for vehicles and projects. The right choice when this is your primary residence and you want the convenience of a shop without a second building.
Mostly shop, with living quarters attached. The working space leads and the living area is sized for comfort rather than square footage. Popular for ranch properties, weekend places, or living on site while a main home is built. See our shouses.
Conventional stick-built construction still makes sense for in-town lots, covenant-restricted neighborhoods, or designs where a barn-style roofline would not fit. We build those too. See our custom homes.
Your local barndominium builder in the Black Hills.
Burress Construction has built barndominiums across the Black Hills for years, so we know the local terrain, the county permitting and residential code process, and the wind and snow loads South Dakota buildings have to handle. As an authorized EPS builder and licensed South Dakota general contractor, we engineer each building right for where it is going, from Meade and Pennington County requirements to the heavier snow loads up near Lead and Deadwood.
We build barndominiums, shouses, and post-frame homes on acreage throughout western South Dakota. See our barndominium projects →
Barndominium FAQs.
Cost depends on how much of the building is finished living space versus shop, plus size, ceiling height, and the level of interior finish. The shell goes up for less per square foot than conventional framing, but kitchens, baths, and finishes carry normal residential costs. We provide quotes so you know exactly what is included.
